ADERSIM International Students Competition in Disaster and Emergency Simulation
The Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE) Program in Advanced Disaster, Emergency and Rapid-response Simulation (ADERSIM) at York University, Toronto, Canada, invites students to submit their simulation model by September 16, 2016 for this international competition.
Competition Rules
- All participants must currently be students (enrolled as undergraduate, masters or doctoral students).
- Competition is open to students from all academic backgrounds and from all countries.
- The competition is open to individual or group participants; however, only one representative from the winning group will receive the award.
- A competitor may participate with only one entry.
- The simulation/model must be developed and implemented using AnyLogic multimethod simulation software.
- The system under analysis must be related to Disaster and Emergency Management (hazard and risk modelling, disaster risk mitigation, emergency evacuation, emergency operations, disaster logistics, disaster recovery and reconstruction, etc.).
- The official competition language is English. All materials, including the presentation video, must comply with this requirement.

Submission requirements
i. Executive summary report (a pdf file of maximum five pages)
- Cover letter (name(s), institution(s), and contact info)
- Problem description
- Objectives
- Description of the model
- Link to the online model (www.RunTheModel.com)
- Simulation results
ii. The AnyLogic model must be posted online (uploaded onto www.RunTheModel.com) for review and consideration of the Competition’s Adjudication Committee.
iii. Simulation project presentation (a video with maximum length of 5 minutes, shared in Google Drive with access for the competition’s organizers).
- All materials (executive summary reports) should be sent as a single package by email to: jnosedal@yorku.ca by the Competition submission deadline as specified.
Awards/Prizes
The ADERSIM Competition showcases the extraordinary talents of students while encouraging them to develop innovative solutions for disaster and emergency management related issues.
a) The Competition’s winner will present the project at the AnyLogic Conference 2016 in Nashville, Tennessee, USA, on November 16-17, 2016.
- Registration fee and accommodation will be sponsored by AnyLogic.
- Travel expenses will be partially covered by NSERC CREATE ADERSIM program.
- The winner will receive a one year AnyLogic Professional License.
b) The Competition’s Organizing Committee may consider the top three outstanding participants as visiting researchers for up to 4 months at York University with full or partial travel and accommodation funding to further develop their simulation projects in collaboration with the ADERSIM research team.
c) Every participant will receive a certificate from the Organizing Committee.
